Robert Glenn Mason, 85, of Concord, NC. Born March 7, 1926, he was the son of the late John B. and Etta Gosnell Mason, and husband of the late Virginia Geraldine "Charlie" Hamrick Mason. Mr. Mason was a 1944 graduate of Tri High School. He was called into the U.S. Air Force one month prior to graduation and his diploma was presented to his father. While in school, Bob was a member of the Beta Club and the Civil Air Patrol. He graduated from Kings Business College in Charlotte. The war ending before he got his pilot's license, he took lessons from Bill Hope of Fairforest at the Spartanburg City Airport. Bob loved racing and flying. He was sick for several years but never gave up going to his air show every year and flew with his son to Florida about a month ago. He took his "Heavenly Flight" on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, while vacationing with his family in Myrtle Beach, SC. He is survived by one son, Larry Steven Mason and fiancée, Ann King of Concord, NC; a granddaughter, Whitney Mason Socarras of Concord, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Ava Katherine and Jacob Cruz Socarras; one sister, Dorothy Mason Wilson of Boiling Springs, SC; and one sister-in-law, Lelleree Johnson Mason of Newberry, SC. He was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Lyles Mason. A cryptside service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 27, 2011, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Steve Ayers. The family will receive friends at the cryptside following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tucker Hospice House, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
