Robert Smith

Robert Lancaster Smith, 90, of 7215 Highway 215, Pauline, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born February 19, 1921, in Glenn Springs, SC, he was the son of the late Albert Clifton Smith, M.D. and Emma White Freeman Smith, and was the husband of the late Corrinne Bagwell Smith. He attended Glenn Springs Grammar and Pauline High Schools and Clemson Military College. He served in the European Military Theatre, WWII from 1944-1946, with Company A 255th Infantry, 63rd Division of the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant and Squad Leader 604 and awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. Employed by Draper Corporation-North American Rockwell, he retired as manager of the patterns and storage department. A life-long member of Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church, he served as Elder (Emeritus), Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Clerk of Session, and a member of the choir for over 60 years. A fifty-year member of Calhoun Lodge #81 AFM, he was Worshipful Master, Secretary (38 years), offices of the Grand Lodge, and 32nd Degree Shriner of the Hejaz Temple. He was a life member of the PTA, serving as first president of the Pauline-Glenn Springs School PTA and the Roebuck Band Booster Club. He was also an active member of the Sons of the Confederacy. He spent many hours in his workshop in the log cabin behind Camp Hill, making bluebird boxes, which are distributed all over Spartanburg County. Survivors include daughters, Rebecca Smith Bray (Virgil) of Glenn Springs, SC and Portland, OR, Margaret Smith Burnette (Robert), and Linda Smith Powell (Jim), all of Pauline, SC; grandchildren, Sherrie Miles Burdick (Brooke) of Mukilteo, WA, Mark Lancaster Miles, M.D. (Tammy) of Glenn Springs, Elizabeth Burnett Killen (Tom) of Charlotte, NC, Elizabeth Thompson-Gold, PhD (Gregg) of Arcata, CA, Ashlie Burnette Webb (Kenneth) and Jeff Powell (Susan), all of Greenville, SC; great-grandchildren, Miles and Sam Burdick, Amelia and Isabel Miles, Will and Kate Killen, and Elijah, Jonah and Bennett Webb; brothers, Albert Clifton Smith, Jr., M.D. (Heleanna) of Cincinnati, OH, and William Poole Smith (Billie Ann) of Clinton, SC; many loving nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Estelle Smith. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Corrine Bagwell Smith; a sister, Elizabeth Smith Butler; a son-in-law, James Donald Bray, M.D.; a grandson, Alfred McKinley "Chip" Miles III; and a great-granddaughter, Alexa McKinley Miles. Masonic Rites will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. B. E. Pettit, the Rev. Dr. William Lancaster, and the Rev. Monty King. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Baptist Church, Highway 215, Pauline, SC. Afterwards the family will receive friends at the Philadelphia Baptist Church Family Life Center. Honoraries will be Hershel Brown, Roger Cartee, Bill Farmer, Tim Foster, Douglas Goodwin, Frank P. Hayes, Earl McArthur, Frank Oglesby, Dennis Stevens, and Ronnie Thornton.
