Robert Eugene Hayes, 88, of Walnut Grove, Roebuck, SC, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Woodruff Manor. Born August 6, 1926, in Pauline, SC, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Hayes and Clevia Quincy Ann Lancaster Hayes. A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Hayes retired as a manager with the SC Employment Security Commission, Clinton office, and he was a member of the International Association of Personnel Employment Security. He was also a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a former deacon. Surviving is his beloved wife of 68 years, Marguerite Gwinn Hayes of the home; daughter, Phyllis Hayes Thompson (Mark J. Thompson) of Walnut Grove; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Mathis Hayes Lee (Timothy Lee) of Walnut Grove; grandchildren, Tanya Victoria Thompson, Michael Randolph Thompson, Robert Andrew Thompson and his wife Susan Schaper Thompson, and Kathryn Leann Hayes; great-grandchildren, Ellen Violet Thompson and Morgan Elizabeth Thompson; and brothers, Frank P. Hayes of Pauline, SC, and John C. Hayes of Spartanburg, SC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Keith Eugene Hayes; grandson, James Edmund Thompson; eight brothers, Hugh Alvin, Percy and James (infants), Lucian, Ray, Grover Carl "G.C.", William "Willie" C., and Rembert W. Hayes; and two sisters, Ellen Hayes and Clevia Crow. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian P. Harris. Burial will be in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, 3119 Hwy 56, Pauline, SC 29374.
