Robert Fay

Robert Clovis Fay, 91, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, March 11, 2016, at Spartanburg Medical Center. A native of Dobbs Ferry, NY, he was born November 3, 1924 to the late Pauline A. and Joseph J. Fay and was married to Margaret Shannon Fay for 63 years. Bob graduated BME from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MBA from the University of Buffalo and was a registered professional engineer. He was a Lieutenant, Jg. in the Navy during World War II, having served in the Atlantic and in the Philippines on an anti-submarine patrol craft (PC). He worked for the American Locomotive Company for 15 years as field engineer, servicing railroads from Montreal (CP) to Miami (SAL) and west to Kansas City (MP) and New Orleans (NO&LC). He later worked in diesel engine research and lastly on Navy nuclear projects, including components for the first nuclear aircraft carrier. He was employed at Milliken Research Corporation mainly in machine and process design and received nine patents. Mr. Fay was active at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church where he served on the original Parish Council and St. Paul School where he was past president of the PTO. He was also a past Grand Knight and active many years with the Knights of Columbus, a former Scoutmaster, as well as a longtime volunteer with Mobile Meals Service and Habitat for Humanity. In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Robert Fay, Jr. (Joanne) and Michael Fay (Wendy), all of Atlanta, GA, Patrick Fay (Joyce) of Cary, NC, and Timothy Fay (Thanh) of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Mary Stockham (Erik) of Shelby, NC; nine grandchildren, Holly McCallum (Andrew), Nicole Wagner (Chris), Max Fay, Matthew Fay, Jeffery Fay, Brian Fay, Molly Fay, Robert Stockham, and William Stockham; two great-grandchildren, Korben McCallum and Bruce Wagner; and sister-in-law, Mai Fay of Springfield, VA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Joseph S. Fay; and brother, Jack Fay. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 17, 2016, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, by the Rev. David R. Whitman. A reception will follow in the Parish Life Center. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 North Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
