Rita Welsh Cox, 92, of Spartanburg, and a long time resident of Florence, SC, died Friday, October 14, 2011 at Summit Hills Assisted Living. Born August 8, 1919 in Dover, NH, she was the daughter of the late John Patrick and Elizabeth Bernadette Grimshaw Welsh and wife of the late Hugo Lesesne Cox. Mrs. Cox was employed at the Boston Naval Yard during WWII, Gladstone Dress Shop and the Carriage Shop, both in Florence, SC. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, a former member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and Women's Auxiliary of the VFW in Florence, SC Surviving are a son, J. Hugh Cox and wife Emily of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Amanda M. Cox of Spartanburg, Bradley R. Cox and wife Caroline, Patrick Cox, and Russell Cox all of Charlotte, NC; one great-grandson, William B. Cox of Charlotte; two nieces, Jean Fenerty of Dover, NH and Jacquelyn Bryan of Sunset Beach, NC; and one nephew, Edward Welsh of Chino CA. She was predeceased by a son, Donald C. Cox. Mrs. Cox was the last surviving of ten children including her twin brother. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Timothy M. Gahan. Burial will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in Florence National Cemetery, Florence, SC conducted by the Rev. Robert Morey. The family will receive friends at the home, 56 Woodwind Drive, Spartanburg, SC.
