Richard Sherman, Jr.

Edward Richard "Dick" Sherman, Jr., 88 of Spartanburg, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born April 30, 1920, in Dixon, Illinois, he was the son of the late Edward Richard and Jane Orpha Neff Sherman. On October 20, 1940, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Frances V. Jones, in Stratford, OH. He was a 1938 graduate of Willis High School. During World War II, he piloted B-25 bombers in the U.S. Army Air Corps (1943-1946) and trained Chinese pilots in Colorado and Arizona. Through the service, he furthered his education and received a BA degree. He was the owner of Sherman's Men and Boys Clothing Store. Later he was an appraiser (attaining the designation of Senior Residential Appraiser) and broker, doing business as Sherman Realty and developer of the Georgetown Shopping Center in Delaware, OH. Dick served as president of the Delaware City School Board (1959-1963), as well as president of the Carlisle Elementary School PTA and Hayes High School Band Parents. He was a member of Hiram Lodge 18, as a 32nd degree Mason, Alladin Shrine Temple in Columbus, OH, and Hejaz Shrine Temple in Spartanburg and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. A life member of the American Veterans of World War II and Korea (Amvets) as founder of Post 104, he was elected to two terms as State Commander of the Ohio Department of the Amvets and helped charter the Delaware Civil Air Patrol. He is survived by his devoted spouse of 68 years, Frances V. Jones; five children, John and Roberta (Robby) Sherman Silk of Cincinnati, OH, Jeffrey and Deborah Benjamin Sherman of Granville, OH; Gregg and Nancy Oberfield Sherman of Plain City, OH, Scott and Donna Rhodes Sherman of North Augusta, GA; and Betsy Sherman of Worthington, OH; thirteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his sister, Norma Constance (Connie) Sherman. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg.
