Richard Harris

February 18, 1925 — August 16, 2012

Richard Ballenger Harris, 87, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born February 18, 1925, in Greenville, SC, he was the husband of Carolyn Martin Harris, and the son of the late Kline Edison Harris and Mamie Rose Ballenger Harris, and brother of Joseph Andrew Harris. Richard attended Clemson where he was initiated into the Society of Pershing Rifles. While at Clemson he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division which led him to the storming of Omaha Beach, the Battle for St. Lô, and other battles throughout France, Belgium, and into Germany. He was wounded in December 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. Commendations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Croix de Guerre, and Purple Heart. Upon return, Richard graduated from Wofford College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and was instrumental in founding the Wofford College Golf team in 1947, which went on to win the Southern Intercollegiate title that same year. Richard was an active longstanding member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon and member of the Men's Bible Class. He was also very active in the American Legion Post 28, and was a retired commercial realtor. Survivors include his children: Richard Ballenger Harris, Jr., Virginia (Ginger) Harris Shuler and husband Jon Emmett (Beau) Shuler, and Leigh Anne Harris Buchanan and husband David Ralph Buchanan of Greensboro, NC. Grandchildren include: Richard Ballenger Harris, III, Lawson Elizabeth Harris, Paige Garland Harris, Jon Emmett Shuler, Jr., Kline Martin Shuler, and Grace McLaughry Buchanan of Greensboro, NC. The family is at the home. Funeral services will be at First Presbyterian Church Monday, August 20, 2012, at 2:00 PM followed by a graveside service in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by The Reverend Doctor William LaClair Arthur and The Reverend Laura Ellis Palmer. Afterward, the family will receive at the home.
