Richard Alley

Richard Newton Alley, 81, of Spartanburg, SC died Saturday, January 9, 2016. Born January 24, 1934 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Alfred David and Alma Louise Winburn Alley. A U. S. Navy Seabees veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Alley worked for Spartanburg Water Works for 32 years and part-time with The J. F. Floyd Mortuary for 22 years. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Cecil's Business College. Mr. Alley was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow-Scouting's National Honor Society. He was also a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church where he formerly served as a deacon. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Frances Ellen Magnuson Alley; daughter, Frances Kay Alley Byrnes (John P.) and son, Richard Vernon Alley all of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughters, Susan J. Byrnes Long (Stephen) of Dallas, TX, and Kelly B. Cannon (Steven) of Liberty, SC; great grandson, William "Will" E. Long of Dallas, TX; sister, Anne A. Smith (Tom) of Columbia, MD; sister-in-law, Helen B. Alley Clark (Dale) of Hickory, NC and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gerald L. Alley (Helen). A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, by Rev. Dr. Cris Alley. Visitation will follow at the graveside.
