Rhonda Carol Young

Rhonda Carol Young, 71, was born September 10, 1951, and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday May 6^th, 2023.  She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Jeannette Young of Spartanburg, SC.  She is survived by her two children, Michael Steven Hammett, Jr. (Kristy) of Spartanburg, SC and Robert Ward Hammett (Callie) of Spartanburg, SC; and her siblings; Robert Wesley Young, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Kathy Elaine Young Shugar of Hickory, NC, Kimberly Ann Shields of Columbia, SC, and Kelly Watson Greene of Landrum, SC; her three grandchildren Mary English Hammett, Eloise Hammett, and Loie Hammett; and also seven nieces and nephews.

Rhonda graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1969 and Converse College in 1973, with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.  She obtained a master’s degree in education/literacy from The University of South Carolina-Spartanburg in 1977.  She was a loving and devoted teacher in the Spartanburg County school districts for many years.

She loved her family and was extremely proud of both of her parents.  Her smile would light up the room when anyone spoke about her two boys and grandchildren.  She attended and was a member of First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg.  Rhonda was extremely talented in so many areas but held a special passion for decorating and interior design.  She had great taste and everything she touched turned out better than she found it.  She always made her home so welcoming. She loved to celebrate holidays and especially, birthdays. She was generous in her giving and took great pride in both picking out the perfect gift for those she loved and wrapping them in a such way that we always knew which ones were hers.

The family is forever grateful for the loving care she received from all the staff at Summit Hills Senior Living in Spartanburg, the team on Ortho2 at Mary Black Hospital, and the team at SRHS Hospice Home.

A private service will be held for her family.
