Reverend Floyd, Sr.

October 4, 1927 — April 13, 2014

Reverend Herbert Carl Floyd Sr., 86, of Spartanburg, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Windsor House. Born October 4, 1927, in Conway, SC, he was the son of the late William Harvey Floyd and Flora Belle Richardson Floyd. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, the late Oneida Soler Floyd. He was a 1948 graduate of Wofford College and received his Master of Divinity in 1951 from Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Rev. Floyd was a member of the South Carolina United Methodist Conference until his retirement in 1994. During his 43 years of ministry he pastored ten churches across the state. He belonged to the Rotary Club and Lion's Club for many years in the towns where he lived. Rev. Floyd also served on the board for the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee and was a Captain in the SC State Guard serving as a chaplain. Additional accomplishments include The Citadel, Post Graduate, 1981, Certified Lab Leader, Adult Education; Lic. to preach, May 4, 1949; ord. deacon, Oct. 19, 1951; ord. elder, Oct. 26, 1952; received into full conn., Oct. 26, 1952. Appointments: Blenheim, 1951; Little River, 1954; Summerton, 1959; Edgefield, 1963; Main St., (Abbeville), 1968; Macedonia (Mullins), 1972; Aldersgate (N. Charleston), 1978; Grace (Union), 1982; Wesley (Hartsville), 1986; Main St. (Dillon), 1989. Sec. Conf. Relations Committee, 1955-1963; Bd. Social Concerns, Chair., Alcohol and General Welfare; Trustee, Belin Property, 1974-1982; Minister of the Year Award, 1966; Recognized by J. Edgar Hoover for outstanding work in providing "A Christian Answer to Communism", 1962; Selected twice by the National Board of Evangelism to participate in "Evangelistic Mission", Mexico and Costa Rica; Served on the Mission Field in Cuba; Delegate to World Methodist Congress on Evangelism, Jerusalem, 1974; Mission Study tour of Costa Rica, 1988; Member and a past president, Rotary; Captain, State Guard. Upon retirement, Rev. Floyd became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the John Nicholson Sunday School Class. He was an avid vegetable gardener, spending many hours cultivating his crops, and enjoyed sharing his produce with family and friends. In addition, Rev. Floyd was a talented artist who had a love for painting and drawing. Survivors include sons, H. Carl Floyd, Jr. and wife Nancy of Asheboro, NC, and Max Floyd and wife Sonya of Boiling Springs, SC; daughters, Janis Floyd Grimes of Spartanburg, SC, and Judy Fowler and husband Roland of Salisbury, NC; grandchildren, Sara Floyd, Natalie Floyd, Katie Floyd, Evan Floyd, Kristen Grimes, Brianne Lentz (Kevin), Kayla Justham (Eric), Kelsey Bradshaw (Jarrett); great-grandchildren, Ellie Lentz, Mason Lentz, Addison Justham, and Parker Justham; and sister, Margaret Thomas of Atlanta, GA. He was also predeceased by his twin brother, Rev. Hubert Floyd, and brothers, Rudolph Floyd and Rev. Harvey Floyd; and sister, Bernice Cox Darnell. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church Sanctuary. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. A. Stephen Holler. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park, 4164 Boiling Springs Rd., Boiling Springs, SC 29316. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
