Rev. George Alan Schrieffer, 85, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at his home. Born February 21, 1931, in Park Ridge, Illinois, he was the son of the late Frank George Schrieffer and Mary Gemmill Schrieffer. A graduate of Stetson University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Rev. Schrieffer served for 23 years as Minister of Education and Church Administrator at First Baptist Church Spartanburg. Previously, he served at First Baptist Church Kenner, Louisiana, Gentilly Baptist Church, New Orleans, Louisiana, West Bradenton Baptist Church, Bradenton, Florida, and First Baptist Church, St. Petersburg, Florida. Rev. Schrieffer served as a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of First Baptist Church Spartanburg and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Rev. Schrieffer's spiritual legacy includes an instrumental role in the establishment of the Rice Bowls Ministry, which continues to feed orphans throughout the world. He used his artistic talent to share the gospel through a chalk art ministry across South Carolina, in Kentucky, and as far as Peru and Romania. Even in his last few years, he served others through Mobile Meals. Rev. Schrieffer was a lifelong Cubs fan, tour director, master deck builder, landscaper, lake lover, Sunday School champion, bus whisperer, and the best daddy in the world! Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Melle "Met" Burgess Schrieffer of the home; son, Eddie Alan Schrieffer (Kim) of Roebuck, SC; daughters, Jeanie Schrieffer Nethery (Todd) of Boiling Springs, SC, Carol Schrieffer Brown (Steve) of Macon, GA, Amy Schrieffer Haase (Brian) of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren, Emily Schrieffer, Stewart Schrieffer, Susanna Nethery Hancock (Travis), James Nethery (Kendell), Caroline Nethery, Burgess Brown, Hudson Brown, Hansel Haase, Heidi Haase, Haegen Haase; great-grandchildren, Henry Hancock, Cora Hancock, Violet Hancock; and brother, John R. Schrieffer (Deverie) of San Diego, CA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Jean Mary Schrieffer; and a daughter, Ginger Louise Schrieffer. Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 PM Sunday, August 21, 2016, at First Baptist Church Spartanburg. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton, the Rev. Bob Neely, and the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, with the Rev. Sam Davis officiating. Honorary escort will be former and current staff members of First Baptist Church Spartanburg.
