Rev. James Richard Gaunce, 79, of Pauline died Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his home. Born June 19, 1932 in Waldron, IN, he was the son of the late Herman Francis and Helen Marie Young Gaunce. Rev. Gaunce was a retired minister, principal and teacher. He pastored churches in Dalton, GA, Bayou La Batre, AL, and Westview EMC in Spartanburg, SC. He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a graduate of Asbury College in Wilmore, KY and attended Asbury Seminary. He received a Masters in Education Administration from Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC and an Educational Specialist degree from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC. Surviving are his wife, Avanelle Gravley Gaunce, three daughters, Deborah G. Huitt of Pauline, SC, Carol G. Hazel and husband Rick of Morganton, NC, and Elaine G. Webb and her husband Dr. Larry Webb of Henderson, NC; four grandchildren, Karey, Jamie, Justin, and Annabelle. He was predeceased by a daughter, Belinda Gaunce. Rev. Gaunce was the last surviving member of his family. Visitation will be 5:00-9:00 PM Monday, May 14, 2012 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Philadelphia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carl Mintz, the Rev. Joshua Jennings, the Rev. Monty King, and the Rev. Wilson Strickhausen. Burial will be in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church Family Life Center, P.O. Box 220, Pauline, SC 29374.
