Rev. James "Jim" Wakefield Covington, 76, of Moore, SC, went home to be with the Lord he loved on Friday, August 17, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, after several years of declining health. Born September 25, 1935, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Kirby Stokes and Kathleen Wakefield Covington. Rev. Covington was a retired United Methodist Church minister. In 1960, his first appointment was to organize a new church in Greenville, SC, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and then he went on to serve the UMC Church in 1967-Wayne UMC, Georgetown, SC and 1970-Belvedere UMC, Belvedere, SC. In 1973, Jim was appointed Conference Evangelist of the UMC, and then became an Independent Evangelist from 1976-1991, residing in Greenville, SC. Jim rejoined the UMC in 1991, and served the UMC: 1991-Waterloo/Soule Chapel UMC, 1993-Langley UMC, 1997-Pentecost UMC, 1998-Buffalo UMC, 2000-Aldersgate UMC, Inman, SC. He retired in 2003 and then was called to serve in 2004-Loree UMC, Loree, SC. Rev. Covington was also the president and founder of Christian Life Ministries, a non-profit ministry which worked in conjunction with Psalm 91 Ministry, to send thousands of Psalm 91 books and bandanas to troops in the Middle East. Currently, he attended Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC, where he was a member of the ACTS Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International and was part of the "Lunch Bunch" at the Beacon (High School buddies). Jim graduated from Spartanburg High School-1953, Davidson College-1957, attended Biblical Seminary of New York, Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY, and earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1960. Surviving are his beloved wife of nearly 54 years, Jane Wilkerson Covington, of the home and formerly of Rock Hill, SC; daughter, Kathy Covington of Charlotte, NC; son, Andrew "Sandy" Covington of Greenville, SC; and sister, Kay Covington Green and husband Dr. James F. Green, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
