Waldon “Ray” Raines, 76, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his home. Born in Spartanburg County on August 25, 1946, he was the son of the late Richard Charles and Bonnie Stiles Raines.
Mr. Raines was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. Ray was a graduate of Chapman High School. He retired after 37 years with Overnite Transportation and worked four years with Z. F. Lemforder and 10 years with Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
Ray was an active member of Fairview Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Music Director, Sunday School Teacher, and many other committees.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Thomason Raines; a son, Chris Raines (Karol); a daughter, Kim Raines Splawn (Chad); grandchildren, Kristin Raines, Colin Raines, Bryson Splawn, Whitney Splawn Guy (Tyler) and Nathan Splawn (Lauren); one great grandson, Reid Guy; sister in-law, Shirley Raines and a brother in-law, Raymond Bailey. He was raised with his nephews and a niece who were like his brothers and sister, Richard Cartee, Carl Cartee, and the late Dianne Cartee. He is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers and sister in-laws, J.T. (Mary Sue) Doug and Dennis Raines (Gayle), two sisters and a brother in-law, Charleen Raines Cartee (C.L.) and Naomi Raines Bailey.
Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, 2058 Chesnee Hwy., Spartanburg, SC 29303. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., at the church, conducted by Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
