Spartanburg

Ray Edward Hutchins, 83, of Spartanburg, SC passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025, after a brief illness.

He was the youngest of seven children, born to the late G.J. “Jack” Hutchins, Sr. and Eliza Wall Hutchins. A faithful servant of the Lord, Ray was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. He served in many capacities including Building and Grounds, Men’s Missions and as a Deacon.

He retired as Trainmaster from CSX Railroad after 37 years of service and was a retired veteran of the United States Army National Guard, having served with the 1/178th Field Artillery.

Ray enjoyed gardening and blessing others with the fruits of his labor. He was an avid Clemson Tiger fan, but his most enjoyable moments were spent in the stands watching his three grandchildren play ball. They were his pride and joy.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of almost 60 years, Sue Fowler Hutchins, his children, Robin Harrell and Les Hutchins (Melody), his grandchildren Samantha Harrell Smith (CJ) and Clayton and Kate Hutchins, a sister-in-law, Ann B. Hutchins, and many loving nieces and nephews with whom he shared a close bond. Also, not to be left out, are his mischievous grand pups, Scout and M&M Hutchins and Jet, Sophie and Ollie Smith.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Bill, Irwin, Lee and Jeff Hutchins; and two sisters, Stella Spencer and Naomi Eubanks.

Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:45 am, Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Fairview Baptist Church, 1551 Bryant Road, Spartanburg, followed by a 12:00 pm funeral service at the church. A graveside service will immediately follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg.
