Ray Gencarelli

Ray (Raffael George) Gencarelli, 89, of Spartanburg died Friday, May 28, 2010 at his home after a brief illness. Born January 14, 1921 in Deer Park, Long Island, NY, he was the son of the late Carmine and Sarah Chinego Gencarelli. He was a graduate of Fordham University; retired from Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals Company after 28 years of service; served in the U. S. Navy during WWII; a very active and dedicated volunteer for Spartanburg County District 6 Schools, Spartanburg Regional Cardiac Rehab & Behavioral Health, Spartanburg County School Board, and Foster Care Review Board; member of St. James United Methodist Church and an avid gardener, he was instrumental in landscaping and beautifying the church grounds. Survivors include his wife Julia Becknell Gencarelli, a daughter, Kathie Gencarelli Cardon and husband Jim of Green Cove Springs, FL; three sons, Michael Gencarelli and wife Patti of LaPorte, TX, Brian Gencarelli and wife Dana of Simpsonville and Josh Gencarelli and wife Melissa of Inman; ten grandchildren, Brian Cardon, Kristi Cardon, Kelli Cardon of Atlanta, GA, Traci Mansfield of Exton, PA, Angella Gencarelli, Amber Kornegay, Aubree Gencarelli of La Porte, TX, Maria Gencarelli of Simpsonville, Dylan Bradley and Trent Bradley; five great grandchildren; and a nephew, Edward Grasso and wife Susan of Lyman. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at St. James United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. William F. Malambri, III and the Rev. C. E. Kanipe, Jr. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cherokee County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. James United Methodist Church Prayer Garden Fund, 213 Lanford Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301 or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
