Rachel Meggs Davis, 80, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Windsor House. Born April 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late James Weaver Meggs and Dezzie Louvina Birmingham Meggs, and the widow of Herman Gurly Davis, Jr. Rachel was a registered nurse at Spartanburg General Hospital. She was a member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years, and was also a volunteer with Mobile Meals Service. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Knowles (Lee) of Inman, SC; son, Gil Davis, III (Julia) of Boiling Springs, SC; four sisters, Florence Meggs Huneycutt (Rev. Daniel E.), Kathryn Meggs Edwards (Vann); Joyce Eades Bull (Mel), all of Marshville, NC, Bernice Meggs Brewer of Woodruff, SC, and Janis Meggs Carroll (Daniel Carroll, PhD) of Wilmington, NC; 3 grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Boyce Godwin of Marshville, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Julia Meggs Godwin, Martha Meggs Baucom, Linday Meggs Smith, and an infant sister; and two brothers, Thomas Fordham Meggs and J. W. Meggs, Jr. The family will receive friends 12:00-4:00 PM Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the home of her daughter. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Walnut Hill Baptist Church, by the Rev. Scott Lewellen. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
