R. Burns

R. S. Burns, 87, of Pacolet Mills, SC, died Thursday, November 12, 2015, at his home. Born July 8, 1928, in York County, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Samuel and Rachel Linda Bolin Burns. Mr. Burns was a member and former deacon of Pacolet Mills Baptist Church. He spearheaded the effort to restore the Pacolet Amphitheater and was creator of the Christmas Lights display. He was also the founder, builder, and namesake of the Opera House and one of the original members of the Pacolet Mills Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from Milliken & Company, was a volunteer with Mobile Meals for 20 years, a caretaker for widows and those who needed help, and a caring, giving member of the Pacolet Community. Surviving are his wife, Maggie Millwood Burns; daughters Donna Camby (Ned) and Sandy Servin (Andy), all of Pacolet, SC; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Cluff Burns (Dot) of Spartanburg, SC; sister, Frances McGaha of Crete, NE; and special family friends Judy and Johnny Worthy and Stanley Moore. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Ila Faye Worthy Burns; daughter, Robin Blanton; sister, Alice Ledbetter; and brothers, Ed Burns, Ben Burns, and Roy Dean Burns. Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 PM Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Pacolet Mills Baptist Church, 385 Stone St., Pacolet Mills, SC 29373. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM at the church conducted by the Rev. Norman L. Band. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens, 141 Memorial Drive, Pacolet, SC 29372. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or Spartanburg Regional Home Hospice, PO Box 430, Drayton, SC 29333.
