Phyllis Elaine Teaster Petty, 89, of Spartanburg, passed away Saturday morning, November 20, 2021, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Phyllis was born on October 28, 1932 in Pacolet Mills, SC, a daughter of the late Monroe and Lois Kirby Teaster. She was the loving wife of the late Paul Dean Petty, Sr.
Phyllis was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Paul Morris Sunday School Class. A 1949 graduate of Pacolet High School, earning the Valedictorian Award, was elected Best All Around, and received the D.A.R. Citizenship Award. She received her Master’s degree from Converse College, was retired educator from the SC School for the Deaf and Blind and was the owner of Professional Sign Language Interpreters until the age of 85.
Surviving are her son, Paul Dean “Dee” Petty Jr. (Sheila) of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Joel Holland Petty (Sarah) and Lindsey Petty Smith (Paul), all of Spartanburg; three great-grandchildren, Betty Jane Smith, Peter Ernest Smith and Davis Holland Petty. Phyllis is predeceased by her sister, DeAnn Evans.
A service to honor and celebrate Phyllis’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. A. Mickey Fisher. The family will receive friend following the service.
