Phillip Lester Wood, 70, of Greenville, SC passed away peacefully Sunday, March 26, 2023. Other than career travels, Phil was a lifelong resident of Spartanburg. He attended the University of South Carolina and was an ardent supporter of their sports teams.
His greatest achievement was as a fishing boat captain, steaming to various ports around the world in search of tuna and swordfish. This provided lifelong stories and endless tales of on the sea’s friendship and drama among his crew.
Later in life, Phil suffered from declining health and resided for the last ten years in a nursing home. He was a dear friend to the staff and residents there, even as he endured deteriorating health. In the end, he loved his family, cherished his friends and was bathed in fellowship with the residents and staff.
Survivors include his brother, Thomas Ryan Wood of Seabrook, SC and his sister, Karen Wood Barbour, of Columbia, SC.
Phil was loved by family and many friends and will be profoundly missed.
His ashes are to be scattered at sea. A celebration of his life will be held in Spartanburg, the location and time to be announced at a later date.
