John Phillip "Phil" Marden, 55, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born March 31, 1960, in La Crosse, WI, he was the son of Bess Bradley Marden of Spartanburg and the late Earle Rollins Marden. A graduate of Clemson University, Mr. Marden received a BA in Education and History in 1982. He was employed with Spartanburg County School District 7 and enjoyed his role as basketball referee at Spartanburg YMCA. Phil was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as Christian Life Director. He was also a former Sunday School teacher as well as Youth and Senior Activities Director. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Victoria "Vickie" Marden Collins and her husband Lt. Col. John Collins of Pinehurst, NC; brother, Mark Rollins Marden and his wife Shery Olson Marden of Canton, GA; and nieces and nephews, Caroline Collins, Jackson Collins, Annelise Collins, Krista Madill Wall, Wendy Danielle Madill, and Paul Weinstock. He was predeceased by a niece, Sarah Trebilcock Marden. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Neal Y. Wood, the Rev. Shery Marden, and the Rev. Dr. James H. Nates, Jr. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Private burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
