Peggy Shotwell Hollis, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at Eden Terrace-Spartanburg. Born December 1, 1931, in Henderson, NC, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Ambrose Hollis, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Baker Shotwell of Williamsboro, NC, brother, James Taylor Shotwell of Spartanburg, SC, Jewel Shotwell Lane of Ashland, VA, Ann Shotwell Connolly of Spartanburg, SC, and Dr. Jim Shotwell of Spartanburg, SC. On June 25, 1971, she married Thomas A. Hollis and they lived in Forsyth, Georgia for two years where his business was located and later moved to Gainesville, GA for retirement. In Forsyth, she was a member of the Forsyth Book Club. Remaining family members are her niece, Edith Shotwell Reeves of Charleston, SC; niece-in-law, Sandy Shotwell of Spartanburg, SC; three great-nieces; eight great-nephews; one great-great niece and one great-great nephew. Peggy graduated from Henderson High School, Henderson, NC Class of 1949, and from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC with a BA in Primary Education and did graduate work at Duke University, Durham, NC. She taught the third grade in Wilson City Schools, Wilson, NC, Raleigh City Schools, Raleigh, NC for many years. She was a member and secretary of the Raleigh Children's Little Theater. She prepared many college students in the teaching profession. A member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, GA, she was very involved in her church, taught Sunday School and did a lot of volunteer work serving as a homebound minister and Meals On Wheels program for over 20 years. She participated and was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class and Louise Estes Circle. She was currently a member of Morningside Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC. At her home church, Island Creek Baptist Church, Williamsboro, NC, she served as director of Training Union when it was first organized. She was president of the Baptist Women, taught a Mission Study book, served as Director of Vacation Bible School as well as a teacher, and was a leader in the Intermediate Department of Sunday School. Peggy loved children and played school as a young child. She knew that she would become a school teacher. A special "Thank You" to the loving caregivers of the Memory Care Unit of Eden Terrace and to the two special Comfort Keepers, Joan W. Van de Riet and Vera Bugachuck who assisted Sandy in the last two and a half years of her life. Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Friday, February 19, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, February 20, 2016, Alta Vista Cemetery, 521 Jones St., Gainesville, GA 30501, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Fields.
