Paul Kasler Hughes, 86, of Cowpens, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at his residence. He was born May 16, 1934 in Newry, SC, a son to the late Woodrow and Dessie Barker Hughes. Kasler was a graduate of Clemson University and received his Master's Degree from Western Carolina University. He was a longtime teacher, coach, school board member and maintenance director for Spartanburg School District 3. A proud Korean War veteran of the US Navy, he was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association in Cowpens and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cowpens. Surviving is his loving wife of 67 years, Mattie Geraldine "Gerry" Hopkins Hughes; a daughter, Paula Hughes Moss of Ponte Vedra, FL; a son, Mark Hopkins Hughes (Leah) of Seneca, SC; grandchildren, John Adam Moss (Ansley Alexander) and Paige Moss Velasquez (Patrick); two great-grandchildren, Mattie Caroline Velasquez and Sloane Leigh Velasquez; three brothers, Wallace Hughes (Mary Ann) of N. Augusta, SC, Howard Hughes (Sandra) of Lilburn, GA and Dennis Hughes (Beth) of Athens, GA. He was predeceased by a brother, Leland Hughes. Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Spartanburg School District 3 Community Auditorium, 381 Cherry Hill Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Kermit Morris and the Rev. Larry Lawson. A eulogy will be offered by Mr. Randy Burns. Visitation will follow the service. Mr. Hughes will lie in state in the Auditorium from 11 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. The family would like to thank Cathy Hodge, Sissy Riddle, Rose Collins and Beth Biggerstaff for their loving care shown to Mr. Hughes.
