Patricia Rubel

Patricia DeWalt Rubel, 89, of Spartanburg, SC died Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Summit Hills. Born April 24, 1932 in Minerva, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Vaughn and Eva Johnson DeWalt and the widow of Dr. Harold Richard Rubel.

Patricia was in the Class of 1950 Minerva High School and a graduate of Aultman Hospital School of Nursing (Aultman College) Class of 1953, Canton, Ohio.

In 1954, she married Harold Rubel, they then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where they lived from 1954 to 1957, when Dr. Rubel joined the military after his graduation from Cincinnati Medical School. They moved to Aultus Air Force base in Oklahoma for three years and then to Madrid, Spain for three years. They were then moved to Baltimore, MD where he completed his OB/GYN Residency Program. After suffering a heart attack, Dr. Rubel was discharged from the US Air Force. They moved to Spartanburg, SC with their four children in 1968.

In 1968, Dr. and Mrs. Rubel became members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where Patricia has been a member for 60 years. Patricia has served on many committees, church council, Alter Guild, the choir and was a member of Circle One Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She was one of the first leaders of the American Cancer Society from 1970 to 1975, where she continued to volunteer for many years. Other organizations she was involved in were Area Spartanburg Medical Alliance 1986 – 1981, President of Magnolias Debutant Club 1981 – 1982, First Congregational Parish Nurse for St. John’s Lutheran Church and went on to help establish Parish Nursing Programs in the Spartanburg area through Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her sons, Richard A. Rubel (Julie) of Spartanburg, SC and Christopher J. Rubel, MD (Merritt) of Charleston, SC, five grandchildren, Kathryn D. Rubel (Christopher Blake Shelby), James R. Rubel (Jennifer Leggette) , Elizabeth L. Rubel, Reagan Rubel, and Ford Rubel, and one great granddaughter, Eloise Elizabeth Rubel, and her long-time companion, Leslie Dyer of 30 plus years. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Camella “Cammy” Smith, a son, David Scott Rubel, sister, Jane Mills.

A visitation will be 9:30 – 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 415 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at the church, conducted by The Rev. Erin Morris. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church Health Ministry, 415 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.

The family would like to thank A Remedy Home Care and Summit Hills Assisted Living (Pavilion) staff for the loving care Patricia received.
