Opal Dickerson

Opal Fleming Wilkerson Dickerson, 90, of Greenville, SC, formerly of Spartanburg, died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at her home. Born November 7, 1920 in Hickory Grove, SC, she was the daughter of the late Morgan Jefferson and Sarah Lillian Goforth Wilkerson and the wife of the late George L. Dickerson, Sr. A graduate of Spartanburg Methodist Jr. College and Limestone College, she was a teacher for Spartanburg School District 7 for 10 years and worked for the Department of Social Services for 19 years where in 1980 she received the Spartanburg County Protective Services Worker of the Year. A charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School for many years at Roselane Presbyterian Church, was a volunteer at Mary Black Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Houston Lunch Bunch. Survivors include two daughters, Anne D. Wood and her husband Jesse of Charlotte, NC and Shannon D. Anders and her husband Robert of Greenville, SC; a son, Bill Dickerson, III and his wife Kay of Irmo, SC; a daughter-in-law, Anne J. Dickerson of Dover, PA; a sister, LaRue W. Sauls of Ridgeland, SC; grandchildren, Jesse D. Wood and his wife Dee, Rachel Wood and her husband Pete Pickering, Maggie Wood, Katie Dickerson, Megan Dickerson, Amanda Ores, Bill Dickerson, IV, Chris Dickerson, Jessica Dzara and her husband Dan, Sallie Anders, and Robbie Anders; and great-grandchildren, Kacy Wood, Callie Wood, Johanna Pickering, Jack Ores, Natalia Dickerson, and Claire Dzara. She was predeceased by a son, George L. Dickerson, Jr.; a stepmother, Annie Mae Wilkerson; and a brother, Dr. Leon C. Wilkerson. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2011 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Paul Peterson. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside.
