Olin Gene Poteat, 71, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born May 2, 1939, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Joe Jason and Mary Messer Poteat and husband of the late Sybil Crocker Poteat. Mr. Poteat was a U. S. Army veteran, a member of Horton Memorial Wesleyan Church, a member of Sunrise Masonic Lodge #215, Clifton, SC, a Shriner, and a former machine operator with Draper Corporation. Survivors include a daughter, Hope Poteat Mizzell and husband Tony of Columbia; a brother, Paul Poteat and wife Brenda of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Sybil and T. J. Mizzell of Columbia; a special friend Pat Mitchell of Boiling Springs; and Buddy Wilson of Spartanburg, who was like a brother. He was predeceased by a half-brother, Charles Davis. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Marshall Rampey, and the Rev. Timothy Waldrop. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605. The family is at the home.
