Nellie Thomason Cato, 81, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born October 30, 1927, in McDowell County, NC, she was the daughter of the late G. H. and Bessey Edney Thomason and the wife of the late Oscar Cauthen Cato. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. A graduate of Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing, she was a retired private duty Registered Nurse. She was a volunteer at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home and as a Registered Nurse with Shelter Rock Ministries. Survivors include two daughters, Terri C. McLeod and her husband Dr. Tom McLeod of Spartanburg, and Catherine C. Reese and her husband Rev. Steven Reese of Boone, NC; a son, Tommy Cato and his wife Lisa Cato of Spartanburg; twelve grandchildren, Summer Harrold Gilmer and her husband Jason of Asheville, NC, Emilie Harrold Smith and her husband Josh of Roebuck, Sean McLeod and David McLeod, both of Greenville, Tommy Cato, Jr., James Lee Cato, and John Michael Cato, all of Spartanburg, Ian Verhaeghe and his wife Monica of Oxford, England, Cassie Verhaeghe of Boone, NC, Steven Reese, Jr. of Winston Salem, NC, Phillip Reese and David Reese, both of Boone, NC; two great-grandchildren, Emma Caroline Smith and Elijah Sam Smith of Roebuck; a brother, George Thomason of Union Mills, NC; three sisters, Margaret Sanders of Mooresville, NC, Becky Lowry of Salisbury, NC, and W. Jean Walker of Grove Town, GA; and two brothers-in-law, Eugene Cato and Lauren Goolsby, both of Spartanburg. Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 105 McKay Avenue, Spartanburg. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Church conducted by the Rev. Richard D. Lewis and the Rev. Steven Reese. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
