One of Spartanburg County's oldest residents, Nellie Louise Proffitt Johnson, 108, of White Oak Estates, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Luther Douglas and Mamie Barnette Proffitt and the wife of the late Wiley Harris Johnson. Nell was born December 5, 1900, in Spartanburg, SC, where she grew up and graduated from Spartanburg High School. Nell worked for Southern Railway for 45 years and later in the Music Department at Converse College. She was a faithful member of the Spartanburg Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church for almost 100 years. Nell is survived by her son, Wiley H. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Greer; grandchildren, Bradley H. Johnson and his wife Cheryl of Charlotte, NC, and Laurie D. Tackett and her husband Claude of Charleston; and great-grandchildren, Whitney and Natalie Johnson of Charlotte, NC, and Luke and Abigail Tackett of Charleston. She was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers. The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at Spartanburg Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Church conducted by the Rev. Peter A. Waid. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
