Neal Koon

Raymond Neal Koon, Sr. of Spartanburg, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at the age of 89. A Spartanburg native, Neal was the last living member of his immediate family. He was the son of the late Robert S. and Cuba E. Koon, and was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Ruby H. Koon; sisters, Cleora Smith and Nell Strange; and brothers, Herman Koon and Eugene Koon. He is survived by his daughter, Charlene King and her husband David King of Spartanburg; his son, Raymond N. Koon, Jr. and his wife Melody of Kingsland, Georgia; and three grandsons, Jacob Neal Koon of Kingsland, Georgia, Justin Bell and his wife Stacie of Kingsland, Georgia, and SFC (U. S. Army) Joshua Bell and his wife Jessica of Anchorage, Alaska. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Jenson, Josephine, and June; nieces, Gail Wolfe, Greta Anne Hurst, and Cheryl Crooks; and a nephew, Bob Smith. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Audrey Bowers of Greer, South Carolina. The family also wishes to express thanks to neighbors, Mary Ruth Dunker, Sandra Cox, Minnie Whitt, and Mike Reames for their special support during his long illness. A graduate of Spartanburg High School and North Greenville University, he retired from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center as the Patient Accounts Manager. He also was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. A devout Christian, he was a member of Ben Avon United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Happy Hearts Club and the United Methodist Men's Club, having previously been named Man of the Year. He was a member of Spartanburg Regional's O.F.B.C. He was a devoted fan of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, never missing a game. He was also an avid golfer, teaching both his children to play at an early age, and spent most weekends on the course with them. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Ben Avon United Methodist Church by the Reverend Jones Brewer. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Ben Avon United Methodist Church, 2360 Avondale Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
