Nan Penland Smith “Penny” went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 18, 2022 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born August 19, 1943 in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Nolen Henry Penland, Jr. and Nan Elizabeth Bassett, and was the wife of the late “A.W.” Arthur Watson Smith, III.
Penny was a 40-year member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church. As an active member who enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Disciple Classes, sharing her love for the Lord was something that brought her much joy. Penny loved people and enjoyed serving others and delighted in sharing roses from her garden and taking homemade meals to friends.
She was a lifetime resident of Spartanburg and enjoyed being in the Talisman Garden Club, Holcombe Reading Club, The Assembly and The Junior League of Spartanburg.
Survivors include her daughter, Kelly Smith Kops (Mark) of Milton, GA; her son, Kevin Watson Smith (Cynthia) of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Richard Kops of Dunwoody, GA; granddaughters, Anna Kops of Alpharetta, GA, Lillian Smith, Charlotte, NC, Claudia Smith of Charlotte, NC; and her sisters, Beebe Seeley of Spartanburg, SC and Libby Evatt of Boiling Springs, SC. Along with her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by a son, William Derek Smith.
A Celebration of Life service will be 1:00 PM Friday, February 25, 2022, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. John L. Warren, Jr. Visitation will follow in Poston Hall.
