Mrs. Thomson Johnston

Shirley Shepherd Johnston, 89, of Westminster, SC, formerly of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at her daughter's home. Born April 16, 1925, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Ernest Wheeler Shepherd and Beatrice Paine Shepherd, and widow of the Rev. Thomson Quarles Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. A retired librarian, she was a graduate of Converse College and the University of Alabama. Previously, she was active in various regional and national library, educational, and musical organizations, a member and officer of Thursday Study Club and the Modern Literature Book Club. Survivors include her daughters, Shepherd Johnston Chuites (Michael Douglas Chuites) of Westminster, SC, and Frances Johnston Gilliland of Buhl, AL; son, John William Johnston (Nancy Quinn Johnston) of Seneca, SC; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her beloved neighbor, Shelly Richardson. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 29, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Joanne R. Hull and the Rev. Audrey Hartness Reese. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Columbia Theological Seminary, Ernest Wheeler Shepherd and Thomson Quarles Johnston Scholarship Fund, PO Box 520, Decatur, GA 30031.
