Mr. Gerald Hester

Gerald Monroe Hester, 80, of 2720 Country Club Road, died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Thursday, November 25, 2010, Thanksgiving morning, happily joining hands with his son, Darrell Keith Hester, who passed away on February 18, 2006. Mr. Hester was born in Shelby, NC on November 10, 1930, a son to the late Paul A. Hester, Sr. and Ola O'Dell Sims Hester. He was retired from Spartanburg Steel Products and was a member of Valley Falls Baptist Church, was a 32 degree Mason and a Shriner and was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. A former Golden Gloves boxer and an avid western style square dancer, Mr. Hester was a loving person to all and someone who never met a stranger. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Wilma Wood Hester; a sister, Pauline H. Gossett of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law (who was more like a brother), John H. Donald of Spartanburg; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hester was predeceased by his son, Darrell Keith Hester and a brother, Paul A. Hester, Jr. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Rusher. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Hester's nephews will serve as pallbearers. In remembrance of Mr. Hester, floral tributes will be accepted or memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 901 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or to Gibbs Cancer Center, c/o SRMC Foundation, 101 East Wood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
