Cleveland Sylvanus "Bubba" Harley, 89, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, August 5, 2013, at his home, after a lengthy period of stalwart resistance to several powerful forces. Born June 15, 1924 in Spartanburg, SC he was the son of the late Cleveland Sylvanus Harley, Sr. and Lochie Bates Harley. A 1950 graduate of Wofford College, Mr. Harley served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy in WWII. He was a founder, past president and served on the Board of Directors of the Wofford Eleven Club/Wofford Terrier Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Spartanburg, was a two time recipient of Wofford College Distinguished Alumni Award, served as Vice-Chairman of USC Upstate Higher Education Commission, president of the United Way, Board of Trustee for Charles Lea Foundation, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman, Commission for Higher Education of South Carolina, Spartanburg Founders' Day Award, recipient of the Order of the Silver Crescent State of South Carolina, first recipient of USC Upstate Distinguished Golden Dome Award, and G. B Hodge, MD Lifetime Achievement Award from USC-Upstate. Mr. Harley was a founding Board Member of Mary Black Memorial Hospital, was involved in Chempro Inc., Windsor House, Inc., Alabama Theatre, Inc. (Myrtle Beach), Founder and Chairman, Community Action Program for City and County of Spartanburg, Honorary Doctor of Public Service from USC-Upstate, and Master Mason (Lodge #333) were he served for over 50 years. He was past president of Harley Bag Corp., Harley Investments, and Harley Holdings, LLC, and was an entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is survived by his loving wife Twila Strevel Harley and was the widower of Mary Curtis Ramsay. He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Ashley Harley and is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Harley Dietz and her husband Michael; sons, Jeffrey Mark Harley and Cleveland Bruce Harley, all of Spartanburg; grandson, Christopher Austin Dietz of Charleston, SC; granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh Dietz of Los Angeles, CA, Ashley Elizabeth Harley and Kathryn Christine Harley of Spartanburg, SC, Alicia Harley Bolin of Rock Hill, SC, Melissa Harley Edgings, Spartanburg, SC and Amanda Harley Deaton of Spartanburg, SC; six great-grandchildren and a brother, Robert Ashley Harley of Spartanburg, SC. He was predeceased by siblings, Margaret Harley Davie, Louise Harley Heidenriech, George Asbury Harley, Doris Harley Demeter, Francis Elizabeth Harley Painter, Kathryn Harley Lee, L. Bruce Harley Shackleford, and E. Mark Horton. Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 by Rev. A. Mickey Fisher. A private entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:00 PM at the Spartanburg Country Club.
