Mildred Neely

Mildred Ruth Scruggs Neely, 90, of Spartanburg, died Monday, August 16, 2010. Born May 30, 1920 in Albertville, AL, she was a daughter of the late James Ottis and Ruth Anne Hodges Scruggs and the wife of the late Hugh Asbury Neely. A member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, she was the secretary in the Youth Sunday School Department for 56 years. She worked with her husband at Neely Construction and Realty Company until his death. Prior to her marriage, she worked in the Advertising Department and was a staff photographer at the Spartanburg Herald Journal during World War II. She was a longtime member of the Ivy Ring Garden Club and the Rutledge Book Club. Survivors include a daughter, Ruthanne Candy Arrington and husband Jim of Spartanburg; two sisters, Marjorie Louise Scruggs and Marilyn Francis Scruggs, both of Spartanburg; and two grandchildren, Neely Anne Arrington and James Asbury Arrington, both of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by two brothers, Bernard Ottis Scruggs and James Hodges Scruggs. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James "Chip" H. Scruggs, II and the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Youth Ministry or the Music Ministry at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
