Mildred Bishop Huffman, 88, of Spartanburg, beloved wife of the late Carl Maxwell Huffman, Jr. passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC. Mildred was born November 29, 1924 in Campobello, SC, the daughter of the late Fred and Hattie Bess Wall Bishop. She is survived by two daughters, Rosalind Huffman of Spartanburg, SC and Cynthia Huffman (Greg) Woods of Woodruff, SC; two sons, Larry Carl (Debbie) Huffman of Chesnee, SC and Richard Paul Huffman of Spartanburg, SC; two grandchildren, Stephanie Huffman of Spartanburg, SC and Jacob Huffman of Greenville, SC; a step-granddaughter, Heidi (Stephen) Smith and their three children of Greenville, SC; a step-grandson, Jake Shehan of Greer, SC and his daughter, Riley Grace of Simpsonville, SC; a brother-in-law, Donald Tysor (Merle) Huffman of Elon, NC; nephews, Rev. David (Elaine) Huffman of Raleigh, NC, Steve (Nadia) Bishop of Charlotte, NC, Lynn (Karen) Bishop of Concord, NC, and Charles E. (Carol) Bishop, Jr. of Armonk, NY; nieces, Cathy (Mike) Bullard of Elon, NC, Susan (Dr. Steve) Bolick of Raleigh, NC, Patricia (Tracy) Law of Apex, NC, Sue (Dr. Tilt) Thompkins of Weaverville, NC, Dr. Catherine (Rev. Al) Thorne of Colonial Heights, VA, and Alice (Jeff) Moody of Kannapolis, NC. Mildred was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. Charles Edwin Bishop of Raleigh/Durham, NC and Elbert Earl Bishop of Concord, NC. Mildred was a strong spirit who valued her faith, family, and friends. She loved and appreciated cooking, gardening, current events, basketball, and family trips to the mountains and beach. Mildred graduated Campobello High School, Campobello, SC in 1941. She attended Asheville College and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina in 1945. She continued her education attending University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Women's College of Greensboro, NC, Furman University in Greenville, SC, and received her Master of Education degree from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC in 1980. Mildred was a dedicated teacher, inspiring thousands of young students throughout her career of 39 years. She taught grades 4-8 at multiple schools in Statesville, NC, Burlington, NC, Raleigh, NC, and retired from Woodland Heights Elementary in Spartanburg, SC. Mildred was an active member of First Baptist North Spartanburg and the Upward Bound Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church. She, also, was a member and past president of Beta Sigma Phi, an international service, cultural, and social sorority. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Michael S. Hamlet and special friend, Mr. Richard Chapman. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the service. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the many medical and healthcare professionals who supported our journey. In remembrance of Mildred, memorial gifts may be given to the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, 260 Fairwinds Road, Landrum, SC 29356. The family is at their respective homes.
