Mildred Fields

Mildred Ammons Fields, 78, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at her home following an extended illness. Born January 26, 1935, in Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Grier Ammons and Ava Claude Epps "Teenie" Ammons. Mrs. Fields was a private piano teacher, organist, and a faithful Methodist minister's wife with 42 years of service in churches in South Carolina. During her husband's tenure as president of SMC, she was a loyal supporter of the college. She was also a very active, longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, where she participated in the Chancel and Handbell Choirs, as well as director of the Children's Choirs and serving on various committees. She studied music while attending Wesleyan College in Macon, GA and Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. She was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, loved gardening, and sewing. Surviving is her husband of 58 years, Dr. George D. Fields; children, Grier Diangikes and husband, Billy of Spartanburg, SC, Michael Fields of Spartanburg, SC, Elaine Bermudez and husband Juan of Charlotte, NC, and Lynn Proctor and husband David of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Jessica Diangikes, Tommy Diangikes, Emilia Bermudez, Nicholas Bermudez, and George Proctor. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Alex Stevenson and the Rev. Luther H. Rickenbaker III. Visitation will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. A private inurnment will be conducted at a later date at Lake Junaluska Memorial Chapel in North Carolina. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 233 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at the home.
