Michael DeWitt Fields, 57, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Mike was the son of Rev. Dr. George DeWitt Fields and the late Mildred Ammons Fields. Born in Florence, SC, he was the son of a United Methodist minister and lived in many places including Florence, Andrews, Pickens, Rock Hill and Spartanburg. He especially loved his time at Lake Junaluska, NC spending every summer and living there predominantly in recent years. Mike loved everything outdoors and was dedicated to outdoor conservation and historical preservation. He helped develop and participated in the Glendale Outdoor Leadership School (GOLS) and in many projects with Palmetto Conservation Foundation. He knew all the hiking trails, waterfall sites and best camping sites in Western North Carolina, thriving on adventure and was a river raft guide for many summers. He enjoyed gardening, forestry, wood-working and was an avid astronomer. He was a graduate of Dorman High School, Spartanburg Methodist College and Wofford College and also obtained a degree in massage therapy from Spartanburg Technical College. His survivors include his father; sisters, Grier Fields Diangikes and husband Billy Diangikes of Spartanburg, SC, Elaine Fields Bermudez and husband Juan Bermudez of Charlotte, NC , Lynn Fields Proctor and husband David Proctor of Spartanburg, SC; nieces, Jessica Diangikes, Emilia Bermudez and nephews, Tommy Diangikes, Nicholas Bermudez and George Proctor. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Norrell and the Rev. Ron Robinson. Visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship Hall. A private inurnment will be conducted at a later date at Lake Junaluska Memorial Chapel in North Carolina.
