Melvin Lynwood Toney, 70, of 712 Reynolds Street, Spartanburg, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Born August 27, 1941, in the Beaumont community of Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Toney, Jr. and Sara Frances Lanford Duffey. Mr. Toney retired from the U. S. Army as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service. He was also retired from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Dept. and Norfolk Southern Railway, and was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church in Union. Survivors include his sons, Michael Lamar Toney of Spartanburg and Dwayne Lynwood Toney of Roebuck; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, James W. Toney of Moore, Edward L. Toney of Inman, and Harold L. Toney of Boiling Springs. He was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Gentry. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, September 9, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Carrol W. Caldwell.
