Melvin Astor Gregory, Sr., 97, of Spartanburg, died Monday, October 31, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born April 14, 1914, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Melvin Thomas and Sillar Taylor Gregory, and husband of the late Thelma Juanita Genoble Gregory. Mr. Gregory was a lifetime automobile mechanic specializing in automatic transmissions for Pierce Motor Co., Boyce Ranson Ford, and Vic Bailey Ford. He loved his Lord and his family. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, the Royal Sunday School Class, loved to garden, fish, and hunt. He was also a faithful member of the Optimist Club for many years. Survivors include his son, Melvin A. Gregory, Jr. and wife Mary of Belton, SC; grandchildren, Vicki Jordan of Central, SC and Dale Gregory of Huntersville, NC; great-grandchildren, Marah and Micah Jordan of Central, SC, and Noah Gregory of Huntersville, NC; brother, Lester Gregory of Spartanburg; special friend, Delaney Hess; and close neighbor, Edith Stanley. He was predeceased by six brothers and sisters. Visitation will be 2:30-3:45 PM Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Morningside Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 PM, in the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely and the Rev. J. B. Abercrombie. Burial will be private. Honorary escort will be members of the Royal Sunday School Class. Pallbearers are Micah Jordan, Paul Jordan, Ned Pruitt, Danny Lawless, Kenneth Holliday, and Dale Gregory.
