Maxine Peters

Iola Maxine Feikers Peters, 91, formerly of Spartanburg, died Monday, February 15, 2010, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby, NC. Born November 24, 1918, in Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bernard and Cordelia Daisy Dean Nelson Feikers and the wife of the late William Joseph Peters. A graduate of Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing, she was a retired Registered Nurse and Director of Nursing at Mountainview Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, a former member of American Legion Post 0028, and a U.S. Army Core of Nursing Veteran of World War II, having served as a surgical nurse from 1941-1945. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa P. Brooks and husband Kenneth W. of Shelby, NC; two sons, James L. Peters and wife Jessica of Union, and William J. Peters and wife Janet of Warner Robins, GA; two nephews, Rev. T. W. Horton, Jr. of Rock Hill, and Charles Horton of Athens, GA; two grandsons, James Lee Peters, Jr. and Kevin Brooks; two granddaughters, Tracy Hankins and Sherry Melton; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Grace H. Chastain; and two brothers, T. Walter Horton, Sr. and Clarence Horton. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Father Timothy M. Gahan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
