Max Gordon Poteat, 82, of Spartanburg, SC died Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born January 24, 1938 in Spartanburg County, SC, he was the son of the late Carl Thomas and Evie Bagwell Poteat. Mr. Poteat earned his Bachelor's degree in 1960 from Wofford College while working fulltime at Drayton Mill. He then earned his Master's degree in 1964, where he graduated with a 4.0 and was on the Dean's List. Max was the Medical Director for Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Districts Health Departments. A member of Drayton Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, PTA President at Chapman Elementary School and Whitlock Junior High School, and was on the Spartanburg School District 7 Board of Trustees. "Max was always properly clad and loved his cologne, Obsession! He had an infectious smile, a loving soul, a great sense of humor and was always there to help." Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Carlton Poteat; daughter, Laura Poteat Price (John) of Spartanburg, SC; sons, Christopher Maxwell Poteat (Tracy) of Simpsonville, SC and Thomas Gordon Poteat and his family, (Daniel Freidman, Nikhil Freidman, Kavitha Tulsi Ram) of New York, NY; grandchildren, Clayton Andrew Poteat, Regina Alexandra Poteat, John Carlton Price, Frances Caroline Price, and Samuel Foster Price; sister, Corrie Poteat Thomann of Spartanburg, SC; and brother, Tony Poteat of Spartanburg, SC. Along with his parents, he was also predeceased by brothers, William Harry Poteat and Carl Thomas Poteat. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
