Maurice Burgess

October 4, 1925 — April 3, 2015

Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather: Maurice Wilburn Burgess, 89, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, April 3, 2015, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born October 4, 1925, in Pacolet Mills, SC, he was the son of the late John Alexander and Lillie Dixon Burgess. A U. S. Navy veteran, Mr. Burgess served four years active duty and 29 years in the Navy Reserves. He was a graduate of Cecil's Business College and retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 31 years of service. He was also a charter member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, the past president of AARP, past president of "Golden K" Kiwanis Club, past president of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees), and a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association. Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Edna Knox Burgess; sons, Larry Burgess (Delilah) of Fort Myers, FL, Kevin Burgess (Wanda) and Neal Burgess (Tami), all of Jonesville, SC, and Paul Burgess (Misti) of Duncan, SC; 12 grandchildren, Keith Burgess Jr., Jonathan Burgess, Kelly Needham, Heather Jackson, Kristina Johns, Jessica Juarez, Joshua Burgess, Cole Burgess, Holly Burgess, Elizabeth Burgess, Larson Burgess, and Morgan Burgess; 23 great-grandchildren; and brother, Broadus Burgess of Ladson, SC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Keith Burgess; brothers, Haskell Burgess and Otis Burgess; and sister, Bernice Renfro. Visitation will be 7:00-9:00 pm Sunday, April 5, 2015, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 PM Monday, April 6, 2015, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Ronnie Norris. Entombment, with military rites, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cudd Memorial Baptist Church New Sign Fund, 1301 Boiling Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home.
