Master Sgt. Edward Thorne Slaten, Sr., U. S. Air Force Retired, 79, of Pacolet, SC, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born December 10, 1933, in Long Beach, CA, he was the son of the late Virgil Emanuel and Ruby Williams Slaten. A retired U. S. Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he was also retired from Duke Power Company, and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church-Pacolet. Surviving is his cherished wife, Josephine Slaten; children, Edward Slaten, Jr. (Diane), Bryan Slaten, and Crystal Slaten; grandson, Jason Slaten (Christina); great-grandson, Mathew Slaten; sister, Carol Quinn; step-children, Mike Crisp, Bobby Crisp, Brenda Callaham, and Tammy Summey (Matthew); 10 step-grandchildren; and 18 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Jean Slaten. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Morning Star Baptist Church-Pacolet, by the Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
