Mason Brown McClure, 92 of Spartanburg, SC, died on December 30, 2016. He was the son of Theodore Brown and Minnie George McClure and the widower of Ann McClure. Born in Clifton, SC, he was raised in the Valley Falls mill village. Mason graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 1941 and attended Clemson College prior to enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He served in the Navy with honor and distinction for more than 30 years, to include combat tours in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Shipboard duty included tours with the U.S. Ships GREENWICH BAY, MIDWAY, and SHANGRI-LA. After retiring from the Navy in 1973 as a Lieutenant Commander, Mason returned to Spartanburg and enjoyed working for Toledo Scales until he retired in 1991. He earned a BA degree from Limestone College in 1979. In 1972, Mason married Ann Armstrong, the absolute love of his life. They were very happily married for more than 42 years until Ann's death in March 2015. Mason was predeceased by his beloved sister, Carolyn McClure Gillespie, who died on November 10, 2016. "Uncle Mason" was loved and cherished by his niece and nephews, whose lives he greatly enriched. He is sorely missed by David Gillespie (Susan) of Spartanburg, Cynthia Eason (Bruce) of Greenville, Mark Gillespie (Lynne) of Spartanburg, and Keith Gillespie (Marilyn) of Carlisle, PA. He is also survived by 17 great nieces and nephews. Mason's life, love, and faithfulness to his family and his country were an inspiration to all who knew him. Visitation will be from 10:00 - 10:45 AM Wednesday, January 4, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, East Main Street in Spartanburg, followed by services at 11:00 in the chapel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, College Drive, Gaffney.
