Mary Viola Jarvis Spence, 101, of Moore, died Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital-ER. Born December 5, 1911, in Carlinville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agatha Pfaff Jarvis and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was widowed by her first husband, Elma Ray Hurt, and second husband, Clarence Spence. An avid gardener and canner of vegetables, Mrs. Spence was also a member of the Church of the Brethren and attended Lamb of God Lutheran Church. She was formerly employed with the Licensing Dept. for the State of Illinois. Surviving is her son, William Ray Hurt (Marion) of Moore, SC; grandchildren, Bret Kenneth Hurt (Sharon) of Huntsville, AL, Darren Stewart Hurt (Teri) of St. Charles, MO, Gretchen Gayle Smith (Brian) of Birmingham, AL, and Nora Elaine Hurt of Moore, SC; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 PM Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Spartanburg, SC, by the Rev. John R. Rickert. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1645 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family is at the home of her son and his wife, Ray and Marion Hurt.
