Mary Brown

Mary Sanders Brown, 86, of Spartanburg, SC, widow of C. Chester Brown, died Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Born July 28, 1930, and raised in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of the late S. Marshall Sanders and Sarah Griswold Sanders. An alumna of Memminger High School, Mrs. Brown graduated from Converse College in 1961 with honors. She taught American History and Government at Evans and McCracken Junior High Schools for 28 years. She remained interested in history and politics her entire life and passed on this love to her students, some of whom became lawyers and civic leaders. Survivors include two daughters, Bea Brown Neal (Craig) of Spartanburg, SC and Sally Brown Stewart (Bill) of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Chester Stewart (Laura) of Graham, NC, Bill Stewart, Jr. (Colleen) of Chapel Hill, NC, Paul Stewart (Claire) of Marietta, GA, Wes Poplin of Charleston, SC, Liz Poplin Sanders (Ben) of Spartanburg, SC, Catelyn Neal of Liberty, SC, and Matthew Neal of Summerville, SC; great-grandchildren, Hayden Poplin, Deklan Poplin, Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah Claire, Mary, Josh, and Luke Stewart; and her faithful canine companion, Milo. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, S. Marshall Sanders, Jr. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Friday, January 6, 2017, in the Parish Hall at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Trimble. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A reception in St. Christopher's Parish Hall will follow the burial.
