Mary Ray

Mary Ida Houck Ray, 94, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at White Oak Estates. Born December 6, 1915 in Cameron, SC, she was the daughter of the late Shuler Hiller and Alma Arant Houck and the wife of the late Dr. Starling Speed Ray, Jr. for 60 years. A graduate of Newberry College, she was a founding member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Church Circle # 1 for many years and a former member of the Dental Wives Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Thelma Ray Chapman and husband Tommy of Spartanburg; a son Starling Ray, III and wife Billie of Beaufort, SC; five grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Friday, July 30, 2010 at the home of her daughter, Thelma Chapman. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Denmark Cemetery, Denmark, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family is at the home of her daughter, Thelma Chapman.
