Mary Smith McCorkle, 93, of Spartanburg, died Monday, January 10, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Col. (US Army Ret.) Philip Hunter McCorkle. Born April 12, 1918 in Chesterfield, SC, she was the daughter of the late Aliard Pleasant and Julia Mae Buchanan Smith. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Cavert K. McCorkle of Spartanburg and Philip Hunter McCorkle, Jr. and his wife Gayle of Grand Rapids, MI; two grandsons, Dr. Philip H. McCorkle, III and his wife Natalie of Grand Rapids, MI and Matthew C. McCorkle, Esq. of Henderson, NV; and Charles A. Burns of Spartanburg; two great-grandsons, Jack and Michael McCorkle of Grand Rapids, MI; two sisters, Mrs. Jesse Duke of Raleigh, NC and Mrs. Norman Best of Portsmouth, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, York, SC.
