Mary Hayes

Mary Melissa Greer Hayes, 90, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at her home. Born March 22, 1924, in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Tillman Greer, Sr. and Lena Wood Greer. Mrs. Hayes was retired from Whitney Yarn and Beaumont Mill after over 40 years of service. She was a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher for children, and was very active in other church affairs. She loved to camp and fish and was an avid birdwatcher, quilter, gardener, and rock collector. Among survivors are her loving husband of 70 years, Ralph Edward Hayes; daughters, Lynn Pittman (Howard) of Wellford, SC, and Peggy Bagwell (Ronnie) of Spartanburg, SC; 5 grandchildren, Melissa, Eric, Lena, Lisa, and Ann; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Edna Burgess of Spartanburg, SC. She was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be 6:00-9:00 PM Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to Fairview Freewill Baptist Church Building Fund, 2058 Chesnee Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home.
