Mary Handell

Mary Hughes Handell, 93, of Spartanburg, died Monday, April 18, 2011 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born May 1, 1917, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Mary Wooten Hughes and wife of the late Robert L. Handell. Mrs. Handell was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board and Education Committee and was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. She was also a charter member and first president of the Cherry Laurel Garden Club. Survivors include her sons, Robert Hughes Handell (Linda) of Spartanburg and Donald Louis Handell (Carolyn) of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Brian Handell and Todd Handell, both of Spartanburg, and Kevin Handell (Katy) and their daughter, Mary Scott Handell, all of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Lauren Handell and Carrie Handell, both of Atlanta, GA, and Kate Jinks (Patrick) of Mauldin, SC; and a sister, Sarah Lineberry of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by brothers, James Hughes and Harley Hughes; and sisters, Ethel Parks, Lillian Chapman, and Marie Watts. Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 PM Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in the Bethel United Methodist Church Parlor. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM in the church sanctuary, conducted by the Rev. David B. Smith and the Rev. Patrick Jinks. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary escorts will be members of the Loyalty Sunday School Class and Cherry Laurel Garden Club. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Trustee Fund, 245 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H.
